| As computers are becoming increasingly popular, more and more applications are introduced into the translation sector, including MS Office package (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Adobe package (Acrobat, Photoshop, FrameMaker, InDesign, etc.) and so on.
Fairland boasts cutting-edge CAT applications such as Trados and SDLX. Strictly speaking, they are database management applications rather than translation applications. They segment the source text into separate sentences. After a sentence is translated, the source sentence and target sentence constitute one sentence pair. A large number of sentence pairs constitute a translation memory (TM).
Such applications are very helpful for the translation of technical documents, which usually contain repetitive or similar sentences. Besides, different versions of the same device generally have similar functions and operation styles, so the documents for these versions of the same device also contain a large number of repetitive sentences and even paragraphs. A technical document attaches much importance to the consistency of terms and sentence structures. CAT helps ensure such consistency. With the TM technology in the CAT, after a sentence pair is created, when the translator comes to a repetitive sentence, the target sentence in the sentence pair will be copied, thus ensuring the efficiency and greatly improving the efficiency.
For similar sentences, Trados and SDLX also offer fuzzy match. With this function, the translator only needs to slightly adjust the target sentence invoked before creating a new sentence pair in the TM.
For a large project that requires cooperation between multiple translators, CAT also offers the database sharing function. With this function, the translators share an online CAT and use the same TM which is available on the server. In this way, they dynamically share the TM to ensure consistency in the project.
